I Cut Down Our Sunflowers… But I’m NOT Throwing Them Away!
This Video is from the Youtube channel: “Homegrown Passion”.
Today I'm turning our summer raised bed into a fall vegetable garden — but we're not wasting those giant sunflower stalks!
I'm cutting down our sunflowers, preparing the raised bed, and planting carrots, beets, and bunching onions for a late-season Ohio garden. And because we're planting in September, there's one big question: did I wait too long?
I'll show you how I'm preparing the soil for root vegetables, how deep I'm planting each crop, why moisture is so important for carrot germination, and what I'm watching as colder weather approaches.
But the sunflower stalks aren't going to waste either. I'm saving the strongest ones, cleaning them up, drying them, and storing them so I can reuse them as FREE plant supports in next year's garden.
I love finding ways to use what we already grow here on the farm instead of throwing it away.
And if the temperatures start dropping too far, we'll come back to this raised bed and see how long we can keep these carrots, beets, and onions growing.

Okay, I want to know what you think… 😂🌱
Did I wait TOO long to plant these carrots, beets and bunching onions, or do you think we’re going to get a fall harvest before Ohio winter catches up with us?
And I’m really curious — have any of you ever dried and reused sunflower stalks as garden stakes?
I’ll keep you updated on this bed so we can see how the experiment turns out! ❤
