My Hydroponic Garden Didn’t Go According to Plan… Look What Happened!
This Video is from the Youtube channel: “Homegrown Passion”.
My garden definitely did NOT go according to plan! 😂 My hydroponic melons completely ignored the trellis I built for them, the loofahs took it over instead, and I'm trying something completely different with potatoes by feeding them the same nutrient formula I use for my strawberries.
Come along with me as I check on three garden experiments that taught me a few things about letting the plants decide what they want to do!
🍈 HYDROPONIC MELONS
Back in June, I had a beautiful plan to train my melons up and over cattle-panel trellises and create a melon tunnel. Well… the melons had other ideas.
They've spread all over the ground, but underneath those vines I'm finding some beautiful melons! The plants are growing in containers and receiving nutrients through individual drip emitters using the same formula I feed my strawberries — around 1.2 EC with a pH between 5.8 and 6.0.
The growing system worked beautifully.
My landscaping plan? Maybe not so much. 😂
🌿 GROWING LOOFAHS
The loofahs, on the other hand, absolutely understood the assignment!
I'll show you how these incredible vines have taken over the trellis and explain something that surprises a lot of people — that big green loofah hanging on the vine eventually becomes the natural loofah sponge you might use in the shower.
I'll show you what happens as a loofah matures, dries and develops its network of natural fibers. When they're ready this fall, I'll take you along as I harvest them, remove the seeds and turn them into finished natural loofah sponges.
🥔 MY POTATO EXPERIMENT
Then we're going back to planting day for my red potatoes. I'm growing two varieties in one of my large raised beds filled with composted manure and recycled peat/perlite from last year's flower baskets.
I'm also watering and feeding these potatoes with the same nutrient solution I'm using for my strawberries and melons. It's another little farm experiment, and I'm excited to see what kind of harvest we get!
I think that's one of my biggest lessons from the garden this summer: you can make all the plans you want, but sometimes the plants have their own ideas.
And sometimes they're right. ❤️
Next year, the melons get the ground and the loofahs get the trellis. And knowing me, I'll probably find another crazy garden experiment to try!
