I’m Planting Garlic NOW! My Secrets for BIGGER Bulbs Next Summer

This Video is from the Youtube channel: “Homegrown Passion”.

Can ONE tiny garlic clove really grow into a BIG, beautiful bulb? 🧄 Today I'm taking you along as I plant 260 feet of hardneck garlic here at Homegrown Passion in Ohio! I'll show you how I prepare my garden, choose the best cloves, plant them correctly, and protect everything for winter so we can look forward to a wonderful harvest next summer.

And yes, we're doing something a little different this year! Instead of using pine needles like last season, I'm covering our freshly planted garlic with beautiful, clean oat straw. I'll explain why that matters and how it helps protect garlic during our cold Ohio winters.

If you've ever wondered how to plant garlic in the fall, how deep to plant garlic cloves, or how to grow bigger garlic bulbs, come spend the afternoon with me. We're getting down and dirty in the garden, and having a little fun along the way! ❤️

🧄 Well, our garlic is finally tucked into bed for the winter! ❤ We planted two 130-foot rows, and now I’m already dreaming about next summer’s harvest!

I have a question for all my gardening friends: Do you cover your garlic with straw, pine needles, leaves, or nothing at all?

I used pine needles last year, but I’m trying clean oat straw this time. I’d love to hear what works best in your garden!

Thanks for spending another afternoon with me! 😘

    ❤ Katy

    • @loulauer says:

I’ve tried leaves, straw, pine shavings, and naked (the garlic, not me 😊, or maybe?). Can’t quite decide which was better. I think the leaves and pine shavings absorbed and kept too much moisture. Straw is probably a better bet, at least for me. My bulbs are still in the refrigerator to simulate vernalization (you did well ❤) since it doesn’t usually get cold enough here in NC winter months.

PS – who doesn’t love a smart, pretty, hard working farm girl who drives a tractor and likes to get dirty 😁

    • @HomegrownPassion says:

Thanks so much for sharing your detailed experience with different mulches and your vernalization process! It’s super helpful for others in warmer climates to hear what works for you. I appreciate you watching! PS I’m glad you like a farm girl that gets a little dirty. It sure is more fun then being wrapped tight in a business outfit stuck in some office all day. ❤️

Katie, I absolutely loved watching you plant your garlic with so much care, patience, and enthusiasm. There is something truly magical about seeing how one tiny clove can grow into a beautiful, full-sized bulb with a little love, the right preparation, and time. 🌱🤍

What makes your videos so special is the way you turn everyday gardening into such a joyful learning experience. From preparing the soil and choosing the biggest, healthiest cloves to carefully spacing them, planting them pointy-side up, and tucking them under a cozy blanket of oat straw, you explain everything so naturally and beautifully. Your little flag marking that giant garlic clove was such a lovely touch! 😊🌾

Your practical tips about drainage, planting depth, winter protection, and proper spacing make gardening easier to understand, even for beginners. And your warm personality, genuine excitement, and beautiful sense of humor make it feel as though we are right there in the garden with you. 💚

Now comes the hardest part—waiting until next summer! 🧄🌞 I am already looking forward to seeing those green shoots emerge, those curly garlic scapes appear, and finally, the wonderful harvest you have worked so hard to grow.

Just curious. How do you keep the wild creatures like raccoons deer out of your garden..thanks

    • @HomegrownPassion says:

Oh man, the wildlife struggle is real! I’ve tried a bunch of stuff to keep those guys out. Right now my out raised beds are protected by electric fence and chicken wire. This bed is going to get a fence around it this spring so i can plant more veg and other items i don’t want to mess with in the raised beds or gree4nhouse. It is a pain. My biggest problem is deer. ❤️
