Your Strawberry Plants Need This Before Winter Hits (Especially in Hydroponics)

This Video is from the Youtube channel:Homegrown Passion”.

Hydroponic strawberry dormancy is critical if you grow strawberries in a high tunnel or BATO buckets. In this video, I show how to overwinter hydroponic strawberries by cutting them back to build stronger crowns and boost spring yields.

If you grow hydroponic strawberries, BATO bucket strawberries, or strawberries in a high tunnel, winter dormancy is not optional — it’s essential.

In today’s video, I show exactly how and why I cut my strawberries back hard before winter, even though it looks brutal. Strawberries are perennials, and if you keep pushing growth all winter, you’re exhausting the plant and sacrificing spring yields.

🌱 In this video you’ll learn:

Why strawberry dormancy matters in hydroponics

How cold temperatures strengthen crowns and roots

How many plants per BATO bucket actually perform best

Why I remove all green growth before winter

How to safely overwinter strawberries in a controlled environment

How dormancy leads to earlier, sweeter strawberries in spring

I’m growing day-neutral Albion strawberries in hydroponic BATO buckets using an inert peat–perlite medium, full nutrient control, and reduced winter feeding. This method helps produce early strawberries that sell fast at the farmers market.

If you want to see these strawberries wake up in spring, get thinned, fed, and pushed into production — subscribe and follow along.

🌱 Homegrown Passion is all about practical hydroponic growing, high tunnel systems, and growing food that actually performs.

Hydroponic strawberry dormancy looks brutal… but this is how we get stronger crowns + earlier spring strawberries in our high tunnel/BATO buckets. 🍓
Would you cut yours back this hard, or would it scare you? 😅

You’re very welcome! Happy to share what I’ve learned about hydroponic strawberries. So glad you’re learning with me! ❤️

Thanks for the video and info about berrys.this is a nice video.

You will use any excuse you can to drive the tank.😊

    • @HomegrownPassion says:

You have that right. It does make it easier than the old days of a wheelbarrow. ❤

    • @graftonarchery2713 says:

@HomegrownPassionI don’t have as much to haul so I use a Gorilla Cart.

    • @HomegrownPassion says:

@graftonarchery2713those gorilla carts are really nice. Do you use it a lot? That might be better for me than a wheelbarrow for small loads.

    • @graftonarchery2713 says:

@HomegrownPassionI use it all the time for leaves, brush, gravel, sand, mixing cement, hauling bricks, etc. Get the large size. You can tow it behind your zero turn or lawn tractor.

Thanks. I hope I’m getting better. I still find it hard to watch myself. ❤

@HomegrownPassion Hmm. I’m gonna throw the BS flag on that one. 🤨I think ya’ll know there’s a measurable percentage of your audience that believes that dang harvesting bucket is having all the fun….lol…keep up the great content (for both ends of your fanbase 😛)

Didn’t know all that about strawberries. Great re-cap from when you started them. Do you water them at all during dormancy?

    Excellent Tips – Thank You !! 👍👍👍👍🤟🤟🤟🤟

  • @FensterfarmGreenhouse says:

I started doing that two years ago with scissors and opted for hedge trimmers. I may have lost a few. They got banged up pretty good from the hedge trimmers, but most of them all came back.

    • @HomegrownPassion says:

That’s a great idea. This is taking a long time with hand pruners. I was just trying to keep everything off the ground but thinking your idea and a rake might be faster.

I enjoyed the video thank you
