I am an early model s owner. 2016 p85d now has 150,000 miles on it. I was probably the first 30 yr old master Automotive technician to have a tesla 😂. The good old days…
Amish are truly off grid
yeah, screw all this off-grid power solutions. I’m growing a beard and will be riding my bicycle.
My ideal electric vehicle would have a swappable module ( ic engine generator / stirling engine generator / extra battery storage). Future alternative of hydrogen fuel cell module. Weird hobbyist alternative of steam engine & generator module.
I have to take my generator out of my heated shed, but for less than $10. I can charge my batteries full and run my house for 6-8 hours with generic IQ3500 running on high. And my Batteries last 2-3 days on overcast rainy days.
“The big thing here is that people are stupid.”
Hilarious, but sadly very true.
Look at Stirling engines- heat input from burning any fuel – gasoline, diesel, hydrogen, propane, producer gas, solid fuel. Just adjust or modify the burner, not need to modify the engine itself. Also works with sunlight via parabolic mirrors.
You are spot on about everything especially people being stupid.
Thanks. We’re in a tough spot since we want to build but I have a hunch prices might go down in a couple years. AFAIK a large component of building cost is diesel.
But I also want my family to be more prepared and situated in the short term. A lot of tough decisions to be made by a lot of families.
Be safe out there guys and get ready.
Watched the Indigo Traveller episodes on Haiti, and the gas shortages there, though for different reasons and degree, certainly reminded me of the 73 gas shortages in the US.
Natural gas fireplaces are independent of the electrical grid, they generate their own power to get the fire going, I’m guessing by a small fan powered by the pilot light gas flow. I bet lots of people don’t bother restarting the pilot light when it goes out, despite the fact it’s a valuable asset in super cold weather.
Love my Honda EU200i generator for last 20 years. 11 hours on low load on one gallon of fuel (furnace, refrigerator and freezer) We run it every other hour for maximum economy after experiencing a week long power outage. expensive generator, cheap insurance.
I’ve got one too .. they are very dependable .. had mine for 20 years too. 🙂 Still a lot of life in it .. I don’t overuse it. 🙂
Curtis .. I enjoyed this mental sprint! For those who think of prepping as too daunting .. I would suggest you break things down into layers like an onion. So personal preps might be what you carry on you all time time .. pocket knife, lighter, currency, good clothing appropriate for the season and a sound mind. Then think about filling up some survival buckets with a variety of things .. something to cook in .. dry foods .. large 50 gal. garbage bags .. can be used for rain protection and catching water. Think about what’s in your car .. and have a variety of things in case you are stranded away from home. All the essentials .. water, etc. Layers!
You not only have to start somewhere, you have to start where you are.
Im not an EV believer but believe also that the ICE can be imoroved. EVs biggest issue due to current battery technoloy.
You said it the “lowest common denominator”what a quote!
Highest common denominator.
Lots of people with not more than 2 cells between their two ears 😂
Hey, I wanted to speak to something that you’ve been talking about for years and you’re actually living. I currently have a 200 acre farm in Missouri and a home and we are debt-free but to accomplish what we want to accomplish being off the grid totally and supplying our own food and all that which can be done it’s going to be in the range of well over a half of million dollars if not up to $1 million and cost to do this setting up the infrastructure solar food production vegetables, animals processing of the animals I mean you’re talking hundreds of thousands of dollars the property alone for 200 acres was $350,000. The average person does not have the money or the skill or the knowledge to do this, so what I’m saying is that we need to buy a whole Lotta guns because there’s gonna be a whole Lotta people not eating soon and want to take we have. This is serious and I don’t think most of your viewers or most of the people in the world even have a clue what’s going down.
I feel that if stuff keeps going the way it is we will see global food shortage and ww3 amongst other major issues that many people will not see coming
What I don’t get is that Teslas charge just fine in the desolate waste lands of Canada. I see them here all the time. They work fine.
I’m remembering the 1973 events gas shortage. I’m so glad that I live totally off grid and not relying on public utilities. I living on a farm we stored gasoline and diesel. People needs to learn to be prepared.
My wife got a new Tesla last month and, with the cold snap the past two weeks here in Alberta, it’s been an ongoing source of concern for her.
Although she plugs in over night at home, the cold weather causes the battery to charge slowly and drain quickly. As well, the heat in the cabin, seats, steering wheel, etc. all comes from electricity so that drains the battery faster in this cold weather.
When driving, my wife keeps one eye on that battery level all the time – reminding me of a teenager with an old iPhone running on a worn out battery – always stressing about the phone dying.
It’s been a learning experience since my wife got a Tesla – I am in no rush to go electric having seen the product and the issues associated with it.
This is in stark contrast to my attitude before she got the car. A few years ago I was hoping to get an electric car and charge it using solar – to be totally off grid and self reliant. Now, I’m not so sure about electric cars – I hate having to rely on gas stations and paying through the teeth every week to fill the tank but I don’t think electric cars have reached the point where I’d buy one myself.
I don’t even pay that much for gas but let’s just say I don’t pay the monthy electric bill which costs more than my gas for car
This months electric bill is $350 so it probably would be at $1000 each month if i started charging a giant battery each night. Some countries suffer electric black outs so adding electric vehicles would mean you get no power or you would have to sacrifice electricity at your house so some could charge there vehicle
