The Future of Hydroponics: Deep Barrel Hydroponics

This Video is from the Youtube channel:Homegrown Passion”.

Have you ever heard of Deep Barrel Hydroponics? Today we are going to show you how to build a system to grow root crops in a hydroponic system.

With all that vertical space I would stack barrels and make grow towers. As I am picking some tangerines from my potted Owari Satsuma, it comes to mind that you could use that wall space to grow some citrus!

  • @FensterfarmGreenhouse says:

I did this for a few years and found that the fan sprayers worked much better than drip emitters for this kind of application.
Love what you’re doing up there my friends!
    Take care!

    • @HomegrownPassion says:

Thank you, Chuck. Will look into fan emitters. I have been going back and forth trying to figure that part out and I think you may have solved the problem. Not to educated on the other emitters available since I never had to get anything other than the drip. Thank you for your help!!

  • @ChrisR2517 says:

I can’t wait to see the results with this system.

  • @qmoonwalker3847 says:

    Great idea!

  • @kevinmiller5467 says:

You might get more consistently wet perlite using a hydroponic water ring, the biggest I saw was 12 inches. That might leave a dry outside edge. Good Luck!

  • @retiredlogman says:

The depth opens up so many options. This will be interesting to watch it evolve.

  • @rawbsworld6604 says:

🤔 carrots! Waiting for the results reveal 😀 curious though why direct on the onion seed and not the paper towel method since so small? ✌️🤙

    • @HomegrownPassion says:

We never thought about that, but you are right I should have done the paper plate method. If they don’t sprout that’s what I will do and I’m going to do a short on it and mention you…. if that’s ok… Thanks for comment!!

  • @sailme2day says:

loved it , excited to see the growing progress, always be testing 🙂

  • @rickvervoort9536 says:

Please read and understand the directions before for using this tool 🙂

  • @iamnotguilty says:

Interesting, I’m just getting into hydroponics. Can’t wait to see your outcome.

  • @cuffie2056 says:

    Nice vibes

  • @hightechfarmers says:

I’ve had a lot of success with RDWC with peppers and tomato’s. Find it eliminates that salt deposits on surfaces from drip/beto air exposure since all water is in enclosed/dark system. The aeration in each of the buckets has a considerable impact on mine. Do you use airstones in the big tank that feeds your system? Going to try similar raft based RDWC but may consider deep barrel method you are testing if works well for carrots. Carrots, onions, etc don’t do well in normal RDWC due to smaller planting surface area. Works better with plants that branch out. Thanks for sharing your practices.

    Nice video,keep them coming

  • @PrewittHomestead says:

Do y’all accept visitors and do tours of your greenhouse?

  • @magedmansor7803 says:

What state do you live in?

  • @billprice2409 says:

Why do you send your nutrient solution to drain rather than try to recirculate?

    • @HomegrownPassion says:

SO, we monitor solution and try and adjust to zero discharge. On the Bato bucket tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers it’s just better for us to go to waste because our system is small. we use Dosatron injectors and to cut disease down.

  • @charleskiplinger9904 says:

I really like the idea, but wouldn’t an adjustable emitter work better for this type of application?

  • @gardnep says:

Great video, good luck with the root crops, I grew some beetroot a couple of years ago, on an aeroponic experiment, they grew upwards away from the mat they were planted on. Great job from the cinematographer, kept it moving. If you cut the string on one side of those bags of perlite it will undo all on its own, just have to pick the right side. Thanks.

Very good video, will be keeping track. Keep up the good work, best wishes from England.
