Simple Hydroponics

The Kratky method of hydroponics is a simple and cost-effective way to grow plants without soil. In this method, you place plants in containers filled with a nutrient solution. The roots of the plants are suspended in the solution. Here’s how it works in simple terms:

  1. Container: You need a container or a reservoir to hold a nutrient solution. It can be any waterproof container like a bucket or a tub.
  2. Nutrient Solution: Prepare a mixture of water and a hydroponic nutrient solution that contains all the essential nutrients your plants need to grow. This solution is where the plants’ roots will grow.
  3. Plant Placement: Place your plants in small cups or pots filled with an inert growing medium like perlite or rockwool. These cups or pots are then suspended in the nutrient solution inside the container. The roots of the plants dangle into the solution.
  4. Water Level: Initially, you fill the container with the nutrient solution, ensuring that the bottom of the cups or pots is submerged in the solution. As the plants grow, the roots will gradually take up the solution, lowering the water level.
  5. No Pumps or Aeration: Unlike some other hydroponic systems, the Kratky method doesn’t require pumps or aeration systems. It relies on the passive uptake of nutrients by the plants as they need them.
  6. Light: Provide adequate light to your plants, which can be natural sunlight or artificial grow lights, depending on your setup and location.
  7. Monitoring: Regularly check the nutrient solution levels, pH, and nutrient concentration to make sure your plants are getting the right amount of nutrients.

The Kratky method is particularly well-suited for growing leafy greens and herbs. It’s a simple and low-maintenance way to practice hydroponics,. Making it accessible to beginners and those with limited resources or space.
