Hydroponic Tomatoes the Calm Way | BATO Buckets, Perlite & Greenhouse Setup for 2026

This Video is from the Youtube channel:Homegrown Passion”.

We’re planting hydroponic tomatoes for the 2026 season using BATO buckets, perlite, and a calm greenhouse system designed for predictable results. This is how we avoid stress, disease, and burnout while growing long-season tomatoes.

In this video, Katy walks through exactly how we plant hydroponic greenhouse tomatoes the calm, predictable way — using BATO buckets, perlite media, and a system designed to prove itself over a long season.

We’re planting Rebelski F1 greenhouse tomatoes and setting this row up for a smooth crop transition, moving from cucumbers to tomatoes without stopping production. This is a strategy we’ve refined over years of growing for farm markets and CSA customers.

You’ll see:

Why tomatoes expose weak systems

How we prep BATO buckets for fast root establishment

Perlite handling tips that prevent stress and drainage issues

How we manage irrigation timing and runoff

Why pH stability matters more than perfection

How we plan for lean-and-lower tomatoes that grow over 40 feet long

How we avoid disease problems before they appear

How this row transitions into a full tomato production system

This video is part of our 2026 Hydroponic Tomato Series, covering everything from planting and training to pruning and heavy fruit load management.

If you’re serious about greenhouse growing, hydroponics, or building systems that actually last — you’re in the right place.

Tomatoes don’t fail at harvest — they fail at setup.
This is the calm, predictable system we use every year.

I like the concept of staggering the planting to make things more manageable. I planted way too many a few years ago and removing suckers became a chore. I didn’t even want to go on vacation because just a few days of not paying attention and a pickling cucumber would be the size of a baguette or cherry tomatoes like Sungold would split and drop off the plant. 🤣

    • @HomegrownPassion says:

I know what you mean. My goal now is obviously make money, provide great products but most importantly have fun working the greenhouse. No stress!! ❤

LOVE the channel, Katie! You explain your system and procedures so well.
My gosh, you work so hard!

    Just to clarify numbers:
    pH = 5.8
    EC = ?
How do these change in summer?

Winter timer: water 1 min / 30 minutes
    Spring timer: ?
    Summer timer: ?

From Kentucky doing the same, Marry Me ❣🤣❣ Webster’s dictionary lied, it said all Buckeye’s were useless NUTS 🤣🤣🤣❣

    • @HomegrownPassion says:

Haha, always great to hear from fellow growers! I want to take a trip there this spring-summer and do a bourbon tour. Since you live there, any ideas? Good luck with your setup in Kentucky! ❤️

Hi Kenny So nice day you very nice colour you dressing

  • @1MistryMan1 says:

    Smokin HOT as always !!

  • @silverfoxes65 says:

One year I wetted my perlite with plain water before planting the tomatoes. That was a mistake because it took forever for the nutrient solution to get evenly distributed in the bucket to start feeding the plants.

    • @HomegrownPassion says:

Thanks for sharing your experience—it’s always helpful to hear what works (and what doesn’t!) for others. Don’t feel bad I did the same thing years ago. ❤

Katie was that you squeaking at the start of the video. Or does your exhaust fan belts need tighten😊😊 I enjoyed video thank you

    • @HomegrownPassion says:

Ha! That was definitely the exhaust fan. I’ll have to get that tightened up! 😉 Glad you enjoyed the video! ❤
