How much fog does a mist maker make? See the 12 disc mist maker fogger from The House of Hydro in operation. Ultrasonic mist makers are the newest technology in cool mist humidification and fogponics/ hydroponics.
Comparisons between Mist and Fogger systems please. Have you done any grow cycles using both systems simultaneously using the same exact clones, nutrient solutions, and schedule? What temperature do you generally keep your reservoirs at? I’ve heard the foggers will get clogged from salts in nutrient solutions. As well as not providing as much oxygen.
Hi,
I have comparison charts for specs on my site. I haven’t done any side by side comparisons, but I personally used the 12 disc mist maker for fogponics. I used the large black tub and an 80mm fan set on low to push a heavy flow of fog.
The discs we use are lightweight ceramic, with a teflon coating. They have higher output, and resist buildup. They can be easily cleaned with vinegar allowing them to last 5000+ hours. The buildup happens on the heavy brass discs. Everything sticks to the brass like a magnet.
I think a lot of the people that have problems with fogponics is inexperienced with fog. You need a lot, and you need to pump it in with fresh air. Alot of people try to run the unit inside the root zone, and this creates heat which leads to low oxygen levels. If you pipe the fog in, you get fresh oxygen, and cool air…. The roots love it! Alot of people also try to “experiment” with smaller units, and don’t get adequate fog for full term growing. Thats why nutramist supplements with a drip.
If you have any other questions, just let me know!
Stay foggy,
John

Thanks a lot for a hasty reply. Yah I read about the teflon coating helping to resist salt buildups. Thanks for elaborating.
John Kipp any time!
Hi there – my question is somewhat in line with Mr Kipp’s, and you’ve already partially answered it (thanks!).
I’ve been doing some research into the design of aeroponic systems. One claim I’ve seen repeatedly on the internet is that NASA research has shown that plant roots absorb nutrients optimally when the droplet size is between 5 and 50 microns. Additionally, when the droplet size gets smaller than 5 microns, the roots do not develop well. This is the claim. I have not been able to find any published research corroborating this, or even the NASA tech report where it is stated.
It could be that I just suck at this sort of research, but have a couple reasons not to take the claim at face value. First, I have seen these claims primarily on web pages where they sell the nozzles and pumps for this kind of mist generation. Second, when I do see this claim, the verbiage (which I have only paraphrased above) is nearly identical. That is, it appears to be more or less copy-pasted where ever I see it used.
Since you have used fog systems, have you seen any growth problems?
squirrelflight I have definitely read an article about this from NASA. I remember the picture in the article had a fogponics setup using a tent ^ shaped unit. I did a quick search, but didn’t see it.
Like the intro! I admire people who can draw
Thank you! It’s about 50/50 with the intro… some people hate it…lol
Can you use one of these atomizers for watering a simple potted plant on a timer? If you have any experience with this then what sort of setup and timing would I use?
just to clarify I’m growing mimosa pudica in a basement apartment, the seeds are from the philippines, having been there I’m sure it wants a lot of humidity.
You can use these to raise humidity, but they will not water plants growing in dirt. You can grow hydroponically with them though.
heh cool..was planning to build the same thing. ordered a fogger disk for $4CAD a while back..figured if it lasts a month i could keep swapping them. how long do they last?
They last ALOT longer than the cheap Ebay ones. 2-5 years on avg. I have a lot of customers that have tried to go that route, but it’s not worth the hassle.
Hello, I have a butterfly greenhouse and I need the air to be more humid. Will this thing work? Or its only for decoration? + Will fog go up or not?
omg I’m just order one of this the same yesterday. I love watch the fogger in the plants, special in the morning or night, I hope it is going work for my medium Greenhouse inside and the winter and outside in the summer
I see your order, David. You got the 12 disc, so you should be able to take care of most greenhouses! The biggest factors are air exchange, current/target humidity, and heat/AC. If you have any other questions, just shoot me an email at John@thehouseofhydro.com
Thanks!
The House of Hydro Ultrasonic Mist Maker Supply. Ok, Cool thank you.
What is the name and where did you order..
This looks really cool! Can you grow vegetables all the way to harvest with this method and does it work with all varieties?
Thats the way to humidify a room fast.
Would it damage the humidifier to add colloidal liquid silver to the water?
you gonna reverse a whole room lol 🙂
Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
Sheesh
Nasa recommends 30-50 micron droplets for growing veg through fogponics and most ultrasonic foggers do between 5-10 microns. What are your specs?
Ironically, the plant root hairs that actually do the nutrient and water uptake (I just read) range between 15-17 micrometers… so it looks as if you could come up with a fogger in that droplet range you’d have a more effective product.
they may be that long, or wide, or whatever the measure was, but maybe the bigger droplets attach to the hairs differently if they are too small, like 15-17um
it may not coincidentally prefer droplets the same size as the hairs, but maybe bigger as the research suggests… but if anything new comes up ide much enjoy if you could update me and anyone else finding this
these are the kinds of fine-toothed comb stats that make a difference in the fine art of perfection
Do you need special plant nutrients to use with the mister, or can you use things like General Hydroponics flora?
Any clear, water soluble fertilizer will work fine.
Any chance you guys could make a custom one for costume FX? I would love to get realistic flame fx using this and lighting techniques
hi, I’m sorry I didn’t see this until now. If you check out our Facebook page, or maybe the blog on our website, we have a picture of a customer that made a ghost Rider costume. He has fog flames coming out of the top of his head.
How much does the temperature rise when using this type of equipment?
Cathy Cutler it depends on the size of the fogger and your run times. It also depends on the amount of water that you are using.
How much does the temperature rise in that exact box, with that unit? Also can one of those 12 head units grow a bell pepper or tomato plant in that size box?
Nicholas Plesko it depends on so many different things, the amount of time you’re letting it run, whether or not you have one of our autofill floats, how much water is in the container to start, what the temperature of your external environment is at when you bring in air to push the fog out… So many things.
Nicholas Plesko as far as Peppers go, yes you could grow in that box, but you don’t want to grow in the same container that you are Mist maker is in. You need a separate container to feed the fog into. That’s how you can avoid the temperature issue.
The House of Hydro Ultrasonic Mist Maker Supply Do you have a reference for how long to run the fogger for a basic 6 plant set up? I know the high pressure systems do a 3 second spray every 5 minutes. Since this isn’t high pressure would this need a longer spray?
Nicholas Plesko it’s a bit different than an aeroponic setup. Shoot me an email at john@thehouseofhydro.com
And I’ll get you set up.
Any idea how much water this particular model evaporates per hour?
I guess I’m the only one who actually came here for the fogger
Without a Big Chiller Fogponic is a Nightmare. This huge Fogger will heat the Nutrient solution very fast.
We have success without chillers using oversized units on a timer. As well as smaller units with a Kratchy-like method with the top 2/3 of the root in fog, and the bottom in DWC.
@The House of Hydro how many ppm of nutrients can the 12 disc model carry in the fog ??
I am looking to do a Halloween Prop of a witches cauldron that will be outside. What mist/fog machine would you recommend?
It really depends on the amount of fog effect that you want. A single disc mismaker will cover the top of a standard size Halloween cauldron with fog and some of it will whisp over the edge. You could go all the way up to a 12 disc unit, and you will have fog pouring out all over the place and across the ground 🙂
How does one know how much fog is needed? Are spray nozzles also required?
Hi, we have more info here! https://thehouseofhydro.com/pages/mist-maker-faqs-html
So do you just keep the fogger running non stop or set it up to a timer ( for fogponics spplication) ?
You would need to set it on a timer. It can vary quite a bit based on your setup. We have some more information in the FAQ section under fogponics if you would like to take a look on our website. Thanks!
