Thank you! ❀ That was very useful to learn and has been book marked. I was at a garden “warehouse” (not advertising it, so slightly obscured name) today looking at pots and wicking ideas. My one trip a fortnight outside and out of bed. πŸ˜‚ I have to say your wicking pots look just as useful, plus a heck of a lot cheaper… if my local salvage shops have the parts.

Question though, is scoria really not a good option? I only ask as we have tonnes of the stuff. Previous owners (almost 20 years ago now) used it over black plastic to cover majority of the garden beds to keep their garden “neat and tidy”. πŸ™„ We’ve gotten rid of the plastic, but still have huge buckets of scoria. I had hoped to use it in my wicking beds. We do have a mound of course sand, from where we had to dig out the septic first time, so guess that might work. We just gave loads more scoria to use up.πŸ˜…

    Thanks again! Huge help.

Hey Janis. I probably should have asked you first what you had on hand. πŸ˜…
I’ve had a mate tell me that the scoria worked well if they used geo fabric to help wick the water up to the soil if that helps any Janis.
Hope you’re builds grow you loads of veg.

If you are in Victoria Australia there is a 2nd hand drum recycler in Epping Victoria as I used them for plastic 10 gallon food grade water drums during Victoria’s water restriction era during the 1990’s. Google search recycled food grade plastic drums if you are looking for plastic drums. I am in Tasmania and it is expensive to ship from the main land over bass strait but I could use plastic garbage bins from hardware shops or the sealed tomato growing tubs from nurseries (you don’t want drainage holes at the bottom of the tubs) . And I have had difficulty in the past finding food grade 10 gal plastic drums.

@@infiniteteesHi, thanks for the idea! However, I’m in the Adelaide Hills, near where author/ gardener Sophie Thomson is… so most of my wicking knowledge comes from watching her. Not very helpful, can be rather condescendinh. Rob explains things a LOT better though. More practical and down to earth. I feel far more confident in my abilities to try things after watching his work. 😊 But living near Sophie means I have access to most of the same salvage and recycle centres. I’ll be heading first to local “Salvage and Save” – a family favourite shop. We do love our 2nd hand stuff. πŸ˜‚ There are other salvage places here in the hills to also explore, when my poor health allows. 😊 I really do appreciate the suggestion though. ❀

Thanks Rob for the video . I used tomato growing tubs and have a hydroponic media and drain it back the over flow to my main reserve tank.
I did this method shown but on a whole vegetable garden with black pond plastic and agi pipe with scoria and landscaping fabric but it is a massive work load the plastic tubs look like less work. I guess you could also use IBC containers 1000 litres cut in 3/4 height but it might get over wielding and weight.
