I live in Denver, CO. I’ve been trying Mike’s methods (microgreens, hydroponic greens). I’ve tried kale, bok choi, a variety of lettuces and basil. I’m growing in solo cups in my east facing kitchen window. I can put 7 cups into 1 plastic shoe box. I’m using 1/2 strength Miracle Grow tomato plant food (1/2 Tb MG to 1 gal h20). Using Denver tap water. Plants are growing great. Been using clear plastic 16oz. cups from Walmart. Making cover for cups from newspaper. Had problems with algae, but I like to see how the roots are growing or if plants need more water/nutes.
I do make my own nutrients, for soil, from used coffee grounds or ammonia (nitrogen), crushed chicken bones and seaweed (phosphorus), dried banana peels (potassium), crushed egg shells (calcium), epsom salts (magnesium, sulphur). I make 2 fertilizers: 1 for growth that has more nitrogen and 1 for flowering/fruiting that has less nitrogen and more phosphorus and potassium.

Thank you!! I’m so excited! I raided my city’s recycling bins yesterday for a ton of containers, bought the pool noodles and nutrients and I’m teaching my family to grow food. I’ve used dirt for years but have never been so excited about growing. I can’t wait to have my own year round greens. So much thanks.

Your content is such a gem.
My new favorite channel and not just for gardening but favorite of all.
The way you present your videos in such a humorous and lively way it’s relaxing to watch in itself.
It was so timely to find you for me as I’m making the switch to a hydroponic wall garden and your channel just popped up, I wasn’t even looking. That’s how it works! Much love keep doing what you’re doing it’s perfection <3

Make the world a better place – wonderful Mr. VanDuzee. And people like you are the ones that we have to follow to achieve that objective. I have just got the small seed about developing a hydroponic garden planted in my mind today (the corona virus induced lockdown is indeed doing wonders in our lives !) and I am hoping it will germinate and yield fruit .. Thanks a million !!

  • Joe Guch says:

Hey Mike! Thanks again for this solution! I tried planting tomatoes and cucumbers and Swiss Chard in a 3 downspout setup. In the Cali summer, you have to water every 2 days! I guess not a good solution for Cucumbers and tomatoes except for going from sprout to small plant. I transplanted all into Dutch Buckets except for Swiss Chard which are doing great!

  • TWS PMA says:

Thank you, Mike. I believe the best way to honor and thank someone is implementation. I will get back to you on that. Meanwhile, Mike, you make it appear easy, fun and inviting to do. I look forward to my success sharing in the future.

  • Simply Shandara says:

This is great! I planted a lot of large vegetables on my balcony, & while I did get a lot of green, I did not produce much of the actual vegetables. I think I’ll try micro greens next season. I really like that you can get so much quantity with little space, a lot less effort, & of course cheaper.

  • Victoria Gutzman says:

I just came across this by accident! 😂I love gardening, but my life has changed drastically in the last year…so am not going to have time for what I’ve done in the past. Thank you and your family for all your time and effort to educate others.
    God bless you

  • Karen Huedepohl says:

Great videos! I like the advice of the micro greens also. I am putting to use the buckets in micro greens this year! Like this month, lol. Thank you for all your help, and thank your family too. I know it’s a lot of work to teach us how to grow food for cheap and it’s dearly appreciated.
