Flood Hit My Greenhouse – Here’s the Damage
This Video is from the Youtube channel: “Homegrown Passion”.
Last night we almost lost the entire greenhouse.
After a massive flood hit the farm, muddy river water flooded into the greenhouse, contaminated the hydroponic nutrient tank, and shut down the entire hydroponic system. With the pump underwater and the system offline, I had no choice but to hand water every NFT channel just to keep the plants alive.
In this video, I take you through the full greenhouse flood cleanup — removing mud, draining over 1,000 gallons of contaminated water, cleaning and sanitizing the nutrient tank, and trying to repair the hydroponic pump before it’s too late.
If you’ve ever dealt with greenhouse problems, hydroponic system failure, or farm flooding, you know how fast things can go wrong.
🌱 What you’ll see in this video:
• Greenhouse flood damage and emergency response
• Hydroponic system shutdown and recovery
• Nutrient tank contamination and cleaning
• Pump inspection, repair, and troubleshooting
• Hand watering NFT hydroponic channels to save plants
• Real farm life — the challenges no one talks about
This is real hydroponic farming — not the perfect version, but what it actually takes to keep things alive when everything goes wrong.

Last night we almost lost everything… have you ever had a failure like this on your farm or garden? I’d love to hear your story 👇
Did you have any oxidate 2.0 to run through your system? I would definitely watch that pump closely if it was completely submerged. Years ago I had a pump that was causing us to get shocked when we were working with the nutrients lines.
I hope everything is going well now that you got it cleaned up
Chuck
Hi Chuck I did run Zerotol 2.0 in the tank after i got it cleaned out. Doug went through the pump and cleaned it with Electronic cleaner and made sure all the grounds were in place before starting back up. So far so good but what a pain.
Wow!! Great recovery!! You seem to handle it so calmly! Have you ever flooded that bad before? Hope your veggies will be ok.
Thanks for the kind words! This was definitely one of the worst floods we’ve experienced. Had to stay calm… just work through it and keep going. The veggies are doing great. I’m really surprised how well they came out of the situation to be honest. Plants are pretty tough. Have a great Easter!!
It’s been said that into each life, a little rain must fall – but that’s just ridiculous! Good recovery! I hope the pump electrical parts don’t start corroding.
Thank you! I’m keeping a very close eye on those parts to make sure everything stays running smoothly. 🤞
Build an Ark? Happy Easter.
Next time I may have too. Happy Easter!
Glad you were able to save it and not all was lost!
I appreciate the support, it was definitely a stressful situation to deal with! 😊
No flooding for us. Hail storms and high wind have done some damage over the years. Your house is on higher ground? Thanks!
Yes thankfully. It’s built on top of the hill. I guess I made a mistake putting my greenhouse down here but never really had any problems in the past. Oh well will have to put in a swale or two and make sure this never happens again.
😢 so sorry this happened! Hope you have a great Easter 🐣. Christ is King!!!
Happy Easter!!!! Everything is ok now. Just a little more cleanup and then some work later this summer to make sure it doesn’t happen again. Thanks for watching!!! ❤
Man Katy this is a disaster! Talk about all hands on deck! But, where are the hands? This weather we have been having lately is extremely concerning. I am so glad you were able to clean, fix and get everything back in working order. To suffer a loss like that is worry some and devastating. I hope the flood waters recede quickly and this is the end of it. Try to have a Happy Easter!
Thanks happy Easter! Everything is doing well. Lots of cleanup outside but it looks like the weather will be improving at the end of the week. Going to have to change some grading around the greenhouse so this never happens again. ❤
@HomegrownPassion We got a weird cold front this weekend, but some much needed rain. NOT your kind though and by Tuesday we should be back in the 80’s. But the old saying is “April showers…May flowers”…I don’t know man, its been a doozy of weather this year.
Well done Katie 😊
Thanks Daniel. Glad you liked the video. ❤
Wow
Going forward are you going to install levees to floodproof your infrastructure?
I think so. We have been looking at the area between the river and the greenhouse and I think a 2-3 foot levee around the back would prevent the river from flooding the back of the green house. The front is another story. I think we are going to have to put in a swale to redirect the water flow from the top hay fields. Ugh 😢 always something. ❤ thank you for watching.
April showers bring May flowers!!!😮😢🌞😎😍
Dad never bothered with gardening till May and we had as many if not more Taters than the Good friday planters???
Never did they rot in the ground an we only planted once.😊
Dad is a smart man. Our planting date is May 15 so I know what you are saying. Looking forward to getting my potatoes in the ground I got 15 pounds for this year. Thanks for watching! Happy Easter!!! ❤
Oh no, Katy! Not the start to April you were hoping for – but how you deal with adversity is a lesson for us all. Onwards and upwards, and I hope there’s no more catastrophes. Good luck for the season and happy Easter.
Doing a lot better now. Thanks! Just working through and getting it done. Thank you for the support! ❤
Oh and happy Easter!
Hard work pays off. I hate this happened to you guys but love smile through it all!!
Thank you so much for the kind words, we’re doing our best to stay positive! ❤
Might be my new favorite video of yours. I love getting such an in-depth look at what it’s like to own a farm. And the shots in this video in particular were really great, really get a good look at everything, definitely something for everyone in there. I must’ve counted at least 3 different times I found myself coming to this video today cause I just keep wanting to enjoy it again and again! Hope to see more like this soon.
That is so kind of you to say, I’m really happy you enjoyed the behind-the-scenes look! ❤ will try to keep this style of video for the future.
I hate flood water it stinks Then there’s mud and sand Keep a close eye on that pump motor. Behind the scenes ❤❤❤ Thank you for the video
Katy as if you did not have enough going on getting ready things going for spring. It was so good seeing you again and as always you got some beautiful footage of everything. I so hope things calm down a bit for you.
