Feral Cats & Fox Devastate OUR Native Wildlife
This Video is from the Youtube channel: “Rob Bob’s Aquaponics & Backyard Farm”.ย
G'Day Folks. We had a visit from a fox through the week, which wasn't a very pleasant experience for a local Red-Necked wallaby. I thought I'd share some information on how devastating foxes & feral cats are to the native animals of Australia. This is for the folks that think these pests should be allowed to cohabitate in the bush with our unique & often endangered wildlife.
As for the possibility it could have been a dog, the wounds were smaller than what we've seen dogs inflict.
Cheers all.
Rob

Well said! Totally agree! Although I’m in country town suburbia that used to be on the edge of town (town grew past us), our yard is about 1,800 m2. Full of tiny birds, frogs, blue tongues and other skinks, etc. Suburban backyard with local native fauna. We own 2 cats, both rescues, both desexed, microchipped and 100% indoor only. They are happy, well fed, do zoomies, etc. And told by vets they are far healthier than any cat allowed outside. Proving you can responsibly own happy cats and not add to the carnage. Sadly, we get a lot of neighbours cats visit our yard, and have had one fox visit in our almost 20 years here. It killed one of our free range backyardchooks. We want to use traps to catch the visiting cats humanely and have them taken to local no kill animal shelter. We’re seen as horrible people for it. ๐
And, yes, as a kid we raised ducks for food. Did all the dirty work to enjoy a duck roast. Used what we couldn’t eat to fertilise the garden in compost pits, like you do. Would still do it, if my kids didn’t freak at the idea.
And, as a watcher of homesteaders on youtube, I watch folks who hunt. I, personally, am not a fan of hunting. But respect the hunters I watch as they make it humane kills and use the whole animal. And they are honest about it. They call it “harvesting wildlife”.
I guess those born and raised it city and densely packed suburbian, those with no clue how life “in the bush” is like, who can access food easily, who live in a disney like bubble reality of cute, nice animals who act perfectly will complain. ๐ข Sorry for the extra long comment, the devastation of Australian native species due to the impact of introduced species being met with indifference by irresponsible people has been a life long pet peeve of mine. โค
Fox or dog that took the wallaby?
Are you stalking/watching over the carcass to see if anything comes back?
RIP to the wallaby
Edit: and to all of the animals and critters that are extinct thanks to the cats and foxes.
Well said Rob. Down here I know a farmer he has heard of feral sheep (his old neighbours brought sheep let them loose then moved on ) I’ve been out there and seen what they are doing to the pastures with the cattle. Let’s just say I’ve taken care of a few of them plus other feral species on his property
We are in the suburbs and seeing domestic cats out and about is frustrating too because just like feral cats they kill all kinds of creatures. Good on you Rob for doing your bit to get rid of pests.
Congratulations Rob on bringing into the open what many people tend to overlook, or turn a blind eye to, when it comes to the cute and cuddly little fury animals that we, those of European descent, have released into the wild to the detriment of our native species…
Weโve lived in the country for over 40years and while we make sure we have secure pens there is the odd occasion where weโve arrived home late or have forgotten to lock up. Foxes are opportunistic animals and they arrive , destroy and leave bodies untouched.
We try to live a permaculture lifestyle where there is abundance for all but I draw the line at gifting our best layers for a fox snack. As cute as a fox looks theyโre not farm/ native friendly
SO SAD TO SEE AND HEAR WHAT FOXES CATS AND DON’T FORGET THE RABBITS . HAVE DONE DOWN UNDER
Managing the balance of life on rural lands and farms is tough and vigilance is constant.
people who don’t live out in the country or raise animals don’t get it. Domestic Cats are a massively invasive species. If Cats are not native to an area, they can hunt local species to extinction i’m sorry, but i do not mind if feral and nuisance animals are destroyed
Good on you, there is a real world
Rob you’ll always get those that’ll moan about hunting/pest control no matter what stats you show, i think ignoring them is best… keep plugging them Robโ๐
Hear hear
Well articulated mate. Confrontation is not everyone’s cup of tea and I can tell that some of these keyboard warriors are adding more stress to the conversation than necessary. VERY few who argue that invasive species should be left alone because they are cute, have any genuine knowledge or interaction with nature on a cultivation level.
Foxes, feral cats, rabbits, carp and wild pigs are a huge problem in Australia. Good on you Rob for voicing your concerns.
Hi Rob, Thanks for a informative video. It can be hard choice at times. We have a pest that you may not have, Woodchucks and they can devastate rows of crops each night. Anyways, I hope that you and Bianca are doing well. Stay well
We have a tonne of wild dogs on our land and in the national park that we connect to. It’s not a joke. They are massive and ten or twelve dogs in a group. I assume they are escaped or abandoned pigging dogs because they are that sort of size and shape. Massive and dangerous and just eat whatever they can tear apart. There is no fkn way my kids are going out the back of our land on their own at night.
Well said Rob! And to add one more reason. The fox was introduced in Australia as an animal to be hunted and got out of control. So hunting it is what it is there for but they should not have been there in the first place. Just like cats should not have been there
Nice one Rob!, don’t stress to much, Wally is a Wally!
Thanks for posting this, i live in the United States and didn’t realize that foxes were invasive in Australia (it should have been obvious but oh well)
I hadn’t ever commented but i had been a bit confused by the picures of foxes etc I’ve seen in the past on the channel
