Day 10 Hurricane Helene Western NC: Sustainable Gardening Systems for Emergencies & Everyday Life.

This Video is from the Youtube channel: “The Aeroponic Tower Channel”.

Hi, I'm Steffanie and today, 10 days after Hurricane Helene hit Western North Carolina, I want to share how we ensure food security in times of crisis and beyond. Living through a natural disaster reminds us just how fragile our food systems are, but by growing our own food, we protect ourselves from both emergencies and the toxicity of broken food systems. I’ll touch on the simple, sustainable systems I use—sprouting, aeroponics, permaculture, raised bed gardening, mushroom cultivation, and hydroponics to ensure we are creating our own grocery store at home plus tips for how to secure your own food systems.

I’m from NE Florida. I had hoped to move to WNC 4 years ago, but I have children and wasn’t ready to navigate it. Came to Iowa for some land and simple life. After seeing how awesome the people of NC have come together for this disaster, it honestly makes me more interested to live there. Prayers constant for you all right now!

    • @thatcrazychicken says:

We really are a great bunch of people here and some aren’t from here, others been here all their lives. Doesn’t matter, it’s just community. Its the one state I moved away from many times but always come back home too. ❤

    • @HeidiCancelleri says:

NC folks to me are really down to earth kind of folks…. Beautiful

    • @mermaizingmentoring1111 says:

I do Dosaster Response and Recovery and they do this everywhere not just NC but if you research videos here on YT as to why NC is one of the worst states to live in you’ll maybe think differently! I’m moving after being here not even 6 years and I loved where I was living before and it’s bee.n horrific here! The governor sucks, people are so back woodsy and paranoid if they don’t know you and the native Americans hate any light skinned or light haired people and discriminate profusely! Taxes are high, weather is horrible and rains too much and there’s crops getting sprayed so our blackberries withered up and eventually quit growing then Tomatoes and other food then flowers then the peach tree etc. Maybe I don’t have a green thumb but my mom did and all the plants in her garden started withering away more each year so they’re spraying this area of WNC!

    • @HANZELVANDERLAAY says:

@@mermaizingmentoring1111sprayed with what.. the crops? For what reason? And is it safe to spray them?

    • @ashleylovepace1941 says:

@@mermaizingmentoring1111 well that’s another perspective. Too bad for the government being overbearing. More like that all over.

I grew up with parents who were children during the Depression. We always had a large garden. My Mom canned and froze our food. We raised chickens and pigs. We went to a local store that was in existence for 100 years. Small General store, and we didn’t buy large amounts. You have inspired me to go back to my roots and grow my own food. Very interested in the towers. Thank You.

    • @terryhenderson424 says:

As you prepate to grow your own food, look for recipes and copy cat recipies for the goods you are buying at the grocery store then make your own. Especially those that are basically dry goods mixes like starches with a seasoning packet included, sauce and flavoring packets, baking mixes, etc…

I prefer to make single batches (in the amounts I make) in thier own containers rather than a big bucket of mix. I make 6 at the same time; not sure why 6 but it works. You don’t have to worry about individusl ingredients sifting or filtering down through the mix. Also, you get the grab-n-go convience of the box, bag, or packet. – This is probably healthier but in today’s inflationary times it is also upto much cheaper.
