This took me back to when I had guppies as a young guy. I was always getting icky on them. I worked after reading a few books (yes that dates how long ago,it was) that I needed to add a little salt to the water. I worked out that one tablespoon per bucket of water worked like a dream.

    • @juliemcgugan1244 says:

When I did research and discovered what parametres guppies actually prefer, my guppy population exploded and all of the guppies thrived! I didn’t have to worry about outbreaks of disease, as long as I kept the parametres correct and did diligent quarantining. Many people in the business never told the hobbyist these secrets, because they didn’t want the competition. Some would actually only sell males or even raise the temps of their tanks so that the fish they sold actually ended up being sterile. But seeing the stagnation in the production of guppies meant that it became something of a dying hobby. Some great breeders also told me a lot of secrets of the trade, because they wanted to see young people taking their place, as they were getting ready to retire. For a whole period of the 2010s and 20s, a lot of big, formerly family-run businesses near me closed down and became dentists offices, nails bars, dry cleaners. It was a sad thing to witness. It was a very big contrast from when the country was at the forefront of the ornamental aquarium fish trade (Singapore.) But after the pandemic, I was happy to see on a trip back, recently, that a lot of people have gotten into the business again. I guess that much time at home had convinced them to get back into the hobby and then they decided to set their systems back up, again.

Great system, i would lift first tank…. use second tank as a redial flow settler, with first tank a little higher you will get the flow,……….. also above the sump … retro fit a ibc, firstly wrap in black plastic….. make a mbbr , all she needs to do is buy milk, all milk bottle are suitable for media, food safe and floats, that’s all mbbr beads are.. nothing more buy recycled milk bottles. woops my secret is out. Just chop them up, or collect them put through a wood chipper…. god i watch tooo many videos.. and finally add lots more rock..
