Aquaponic Ginger Harvest

This Video is from the Youtube channel: “Rob Bob’s Aquaponics & Backyard Farm”.

Hi there folks. Here’s a look at this seasons aquaponic ginger harvest we got from the flood & drain bed last week.
Am VERY pleased with the yield from this lot & am already planing how next seasons crop is going to be grown.

Looking forward to some more preserving and recipes, especially the pickled Japanese ginger! (Not forgetting the Galangal :)). Thanks for the update.

    • Rob Bob's Aquaponics & Backyard Farm says:

      Hi Chris.
Will be dehydrating today & hope to get the pickles sorted during the week 👍
Have been thinking about getting a few jars of galangal paste sorted as well to make it more convenient to use for those quick curries.
Cheers & have a great one.

  • Belles Human says:

That is very impressive! Miss seeing your daughter with you, however she’s probably in school(?). My son is finally gardening with me! I have fibromyalgia so he does the heavy lifting. I really enjoy it! Cheers!

    • Rob Bob's Aquaponics & Backyard Farm says:

Is great that he’s helping you out in the patch 🙂
The girls are still around but just not as interested as they once were in helping on the clips or help in the patch. They’re still more than happy to run down & raid it for a lunch time salad though 😉
Cheers & all the best to you all.
      Rob.

  • OYR Frugal & Sustainable Organic Gardening says:

    Amazing ginger harvest, Rob!

    • Rob Bob's Aquaponics & Backyard Farm says:

Thanks Patrick. Was very pleased with all the ginger harvests this year 🙂
      Cheers.

  • Cats Life says:

Thanks Rob Bob, so much easier to harvest from aquaponics than in the ground. Us ‘oldies’ always look for a way of growing so we don’t need to be on our knees. Hi to the fmily! Brian & Sandra b.t.w. that harvest would be worth around R850 ZAR here, so well worth growing your own.

    • Rob Bob's Aquaponics & Backyard Farm says:

      Cheers Bryan.
Have seen it as high as $25 a kg here so not a bad haul at all, especially when you add in the ginger from the barrel too.
      Cheers mate.

  • Adrian Collins says:

Nice haul Rob! I’ve been running NTF for a couple of years with mixed results you’ve inspired me to give aquaponics a crack now so I’m going to set up a couple of barrel systems this week to practice and learn on before jumping into a couple of ICB in spring. Thanks

    • Rob Bob's Aquaponics & Backyard Farm says:

      Nice one Adrian 👍
I’m looking at building a small scale hydro system once the renovations are all sorted here next year. Am thinking of a basic Kratky bed or 2.
Thanks mate & have a great one.
      Rob.

  • Master Michelle says:

Brilliant! I’m clearing brush from a side lot to start my actual garden. I’ve been growing pineapple, bananas, papaya, ginger, loquats, and other stuff all over the place but now I’m getting organized!
I’m excited to find all your information, and it’s so well done. Thank you!!!

    • Rob Bob's Aquaponics & Backyard Farm says:

      Hi Michelle & thanks 👍
Sounds like you have a decent food forest on the go there .
Cheers & have fun in the patch.
      Rob.

  • D R-K says:

Amazing yield of ginger, I’ve never seen anyone grow ginger using aquaponics. Ideas for ginger; ginger cake, ginger candy, ginger jam. I love the fact that you are going to make ginger beer and pickled ginger. Hope you show what you turn this into. Thanks.

  • Kris M says:

These harvest videos are oddly therapeutic :3

  • Maximilian Zhan says:

Damn this is me witnessing ginger harvest for the 1st time in my life. Amazing!

Cheers all & have a top one. 😊

  • HEIDI'S HANGOUT says:

What an amazing harvest!!! Thank you for sharing! I have a couple of questions: You mentioned clay, is this the brown bead like items inside the pot? Also, how long does ginger take to grow for harvest? Thanks again for such an educational video.

    • Rob Bob's Aquaponics & Backyard Farm says:

Hi Heidi. The clay is a growing medium used in aquaponic & hydroponic grow beds. In aquaponics it provides a habitat for the bacteria & compost worms that convert the nutrient rich fish waste into plant available nutrients. This clip gives a basic run through what aquaponics is. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JeoYHWLC9Tc
I think I mentioned that these had been in for about 8-9 months. The growing period depends on the climate you’re growing in as well. This clip runs through a few ideas on growing ginger using different methods & climates if it helps any. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ukEn3T8B8to
Cheers & have a top one.

  • Santhosh Kumar says:

    hi rob ,
first of all thanks for the video. That’s some really cool stuff you are sharing with the world and looking forward to see the parrots that’s singing while you were speaking 🙂

    • Rob Bob's Aquaponics & Backyard Farm says:

Am glad you enjoyed it Santhosh. I have shown the rainbow lorikeets in other clips but can’t remember which ones at the moment sorry. Here’s a link to clip on another channel of someone feeding them on their windowsill so you can see what they look like. 👍https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IgO_Zb3wxvQ
      Cheers & all the best.
      Rob.

  • R U. Mishra says:

Really really superb.Only a happy man like you can grow such a happy giant family of ginger.

  • Isa Bo says:

This is one of the first video’s I saw on your channel. Now, I harvested ginger from my garden and have a turmeric plant in my bedroom. It’s doïng great and will go outside in (European) spring. Just bought a small piece of both products and it grew. Thanks Rob.

    • Rob Bob's Aquaponics & Backyard Farm says:

That’s great to here Isa Bo. 👍
Hope you get a fantastic harvest from them both.
      Cheers & happy growing. 🌱🌱

  • kao yo-bruh says:

WOW! What a great set up to grow ginger…who knew they could grow so well.

    • Rob Bob's Aquaponics & Backyard Farm says:

It definitely likes growing in the aquaponics as does other ginger spices like turmeric & galangal.
      Cheers & happy growing.

  • 《 Sil ◇ says:

    Que ótimo trabalho!
    Parabéns!😊

  • Linda Jordan says:

Impressive harvest! Thank you for the great information. Hope I can grow some, even a little of what you have produced.

  • Jeremy Wan says:

Hi Rob, thank you for sharing your amazing harvest with people! I was just wondering which kind of culture between aquaponic and traditional backyard farming generates the highest yield? thanks in advance

    • Rob Bob's Aquaponics & Backyard Farm says:

I’ve fond that they both give roughly the same amount Jeremy. I do think that the aquaponic system would produce a better yield if left to “mature” for at least a year first.

  • Jether Calope says:

Thanks Rob. My barrel aquaponics was started yesterday. Thanks to you.

  • Syama Faeizz says:

Hi Rob, I am new to this growing plants thing which I has always believed I don’t have green hands. However, due to the weather maybe, the ginger in my kitchen is sprouting.. I am amazed at how you grow them! May I know what is that kind of soil u used for it? I always thot those clay balls are for deco only..

    • Rob Bob's Aquaponics & Backyard Farm says:

Hi Syama. The plants are growing in a fired clay pebble. This clay media is used mainly in hydroponic & aquaponic grow beds.
The ginger was growing in an aquaponic system that is powered by the waste that fish generate. This clip will give you a bit better understanding of how it works.
