Happy Hydroponicing!
I’m betting it’s more than a real one.
That’s a LOT of honey!!! You thinking about making some mead?
Thats alot of honey on toast in that bucket lol
love your work hooch
now i want to get a hive myself
Could it be a heat issue? Does that front side get too much sun or not enough? If they are favouring one side, I would assume its because of an environmental factor. If not a thermal issue, could be that the front end where the observer window is the cause? Albeit infrequent, any action on your part to remove the wood and peak inside is the causal factor? Their attempt to keep away from the light flooding into their hive? I’d suggest doing a test on the next run, do not ever open the observation panel on the hive until you’re ready to harvest.
Hmm, I was just about to post this before having a thought about potential reasons why… And I wonder, since the observation window is perspex/polycarbonate or some variation there of, are prone to static charges under certain situations. I wonder if the bees constant movement and buzzing against it, causes some kind of static field that they aren’t a fan of? If that’s the case, then a simple foil lining on one edge with a grounding wire might be enough to discharge it?
I don’t like those hives. It’s just another example of the industrialization of bees.
I feel like it’s less industrial if anything. No machines, no power draw, no byproducts that need to be sold or disposed of (wax, propolis and all the other junk that comes out centrifuging a conventional hive), no need to subdue and disassemble an active hive or thoroughly piss off the bees – just a beekeeper, a bucket and patience. Not even a bee suit required.

Amazing 12L / 16kg!
A smidge of shade cloth, four thin bits of wood screwed onto the roof eaves, and a staple gun to attach the cloth with, and the flow frames should do better. You’ll probably end up with some attempted mini-cells or wax on the shade mesh, but this isn’t necessarily a bad thing.
thats amazeballs! 🤘
Liked your video. Tried the link you gave for the hive but it does not work. Really like the 3d printing but have no idea how to learn the cad software. Finally what brand is that bee jacket? Also have you done an update on the anel hives?
Great work. I printed your system and tried it the other day. It’s great. I got 19kg from my 7 flow frames.
Some suggestions for improvement:
1. Put some oversize rings that prevent the printed tubes from falling into your bucket. I followed your directions from previous videos but my tubes weren’t a friction fit despite using the same size hole saw. They just fall into my bucket. With some rings that prevent them from falling in that would help when they aren’t quite the right size.
2. Create a plug so if you don’t use a tube or two, you can stop bees flying into your bucket through the empty tube. Should be similar size to the flow frames plugs I’m guessing.
3. You could also possibly key the sides of the tubes so they are linked to each other but can still slide individually. Or even make it one piece if that was your preference…
Thanks for the great ideas! Definitely helps harvest time.
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I want to get into harvesting honey. My plan was to add weight sensors on the feet of the hives to track (via zigbee or wifi) and monitor how full they are getting. Then I don’t have to be worried about harvesting too early or bothering them unnecessarily. Should be a fun project, after I get a hive going (if local laws will let me)
growing some stella bud with everything you thought me. cheers hoocho
Do the bees starve at all?
It might be interesting to put the hives on load cells and log the weight change over time. Something I’d definitely do with Home Assistant. Then you can graph it together with weather and temperature etc. Maybe not super useful but certainly fun for a nerd!
what do you do with all that honey
Likely to be the most ignorant presentation I’ve come across in a long while. As if one sort of frame achieved more production than another without regard for the colony production without it. Aquaint yourself with how bees produce honey and assign less emphasis to the vessel used. You are winning some additional attention which I can only assume is the goal in the end. I’ll que up with the unimpressed group.
how many months does it take to fill them up?
