If you want to grow a lot of food like me, you got to learn how to use one of my adapters. That way you can grow lots of microgreens in a carefree way. I even take some of these microgreens and put them into larger containers, grow the plants out more, and increase my yield. We'll talk about that in another video.
Right now, we're concerned with the setup. Now we've sold over a thousand of these that go in a mason jar, so I want to go over a couple of questions I've been getting. Now through the Black Friday weekend, we're going to have these two adapters for buy one, get one free. Link will be in the description.
So we're going to go over how to set these up
because that's the foundation. You got to get that right for everything else to work.
So we're going to start with this glass baking dish, a mason jar, and my self watering adapter. Now a few people asked about setup. They said the water was all leaking out of the jar before they even got the grow medium in. So let's get a couple of these set up. Now the first thing that might help is put the adapter right in the container and then fill some water in it.
right up to the holes. Get it at least above that. Now this will stop most of the water from leaking out of the jar. You want to keep as much as possible inside of the jar. And we're working with a deeper baking dish here, which will work good for like radish and bok choy. Some of your smaller microgreens might do better in a baking dish like this.
But we'll do them all so you'll see the difference. So we're going to fill up the jar all the way to the top. Take your adapter, put it on, just until it stops. Don't twist it too hard. Now see these holes? Because we put some water in the bottom, it's going to stop it from leaking out. You just got to tilt it fast.
What advantage is there to having the bottle? Instead of just adding water directly to the growing medium.
After setup, I just leave it.
Thanks Mike.
Great video. You are a TEACHER, bro.
What kind of camera is that?
Thank you. Sony zv 10
Great overview and addressing many issues.
Previously you recommended sand as a possible alternative to the clay pebbles. I like how easy it is to clean the sand, but the water seems to wick up to the very top, no matter how high I pile it. Is there a way to stop seeds from rotting if I use sand? Aha! I was typing this during your video, and at the very end you said you’re going to discuss sand next. Awesome, thanks! 🙂
In part of this video I show where I used a plastic container and punched a few holes in it to prevent that. More to come.

GDay Mike still playing with various types of sand. As Margretclaypool said sand seems to wick TOO well. I have been doing quite a lot of research into “wicking” I don’t know if you or other Kratky people know of “perched water level” a subject I’ve been looking up. It is a point the wicking of water/nutrient going up is less than the gravitational pull going down at which point the medium below this level is saturated and the medium above this level remains damp. This will determine the depth of “sand” which will be optimum for best growth of micro greens ( seeds would be in the damp section of medium not the saturated section)
Hi great idea. I see you don’t ship to the uk 🇬🇧
Will that change in the future. 🌞❤️🌱 thanks
I got my adapter yesterday!!
Awesome!
Love watching your videos, go back and watch them again quite often. Thanks for the info from Australia
Thank you very much!
How do you keep bugs or mosquitoes away?
Good Idea.
