The new Chicken Pen for Layers & Meat Birds

This Video is from the Youtube channel: “Rob Bob’s Aquaponics & Backyard Farm”.Β

Hey Folks. We've started renovating the old pig shed so it can become the new night pen for both our meat & egg laying chickens. We would love to hear any ideas that may help improve our design. Suggestions for meat bird breads would be appreciated as well.
BTW, what do you think of B's suggestion of the alternate video title,
"From Bacon to Chicky Nuggets"? πŸ˜…πŸ€”
Cheers all.

  • @mrleeal says:

keep it high its good for keeping cool and ventilated.also i think we can start using Bianca as a unit of measurement for scale in videos how tall is she again? for example we can say fort chicken is 2 Bianca’s high and 4 Bianca’s long lolz

  • @Kearnesy says:

My Australorps are non stop layers and apparently can lay for longer than the ISAs. Leghorns make nice meat birds

  • @Inventerius says:

Cut off the bottom to the first bar to get rid off the rust but keep the height by putting concreet in place of the cut off part. Make a division in the middle with wire mesh and a door you can walk through. The door saves walking around to the other side and allows to be set open if you want 1 space once the meatbirds have been harvested.

    • @Gayle.M says:

And if the area is still to big make 3 rooms using this method and use the first room as storage for the feed, bedding, and other such stuff.

  • @andrewradford3953 says:

Put steel posts in concrete, but build up concrete above the post hole with an upside down flower pot above the ground. Chook poo and mulch will build up well above the ground level.
Power wands aren’t 100% reliable, but I’d recommend owning a multimeter. Also an outlet tester is handy and cheap for a new place with unknown wiring. They are cheap, and also good for testing power leads where an end has been replaced.

I would buy a star picket lifter rather than using high lift jack. a purpose star picket remover is much quicker and pretty light to carry about; from experience I stuffed up more star pickets with lifting from a front end loader than saved! I would also keep as much height in that repurposed cattle carrier to be used as chook pen, never know how you want to use it later, sad it wasn’t sitting on breeze blocks to protect it bit better but ces’t la vie!

  • @kerryevans2038 says:

Agree with others keep it high better i heat.Summer nights still too hot.Chookscope with our winters as long as they are out of the wind where their perches are.Meat birds often too heavy to roost up high.Should work well for both with a divider. All in all not a bad container for the bids

  • @nunyabusiness7001 says:

Crossbreeds are terrible just get australorp pures mate. Fantastic multipurpose bird. In all honesty i just run all my girls together when one goes clucky i let her and the chicks pop out and when my flock gets to 40 from 20 i just pick out birds to eat. australorp Roosters grow bloody quick too Knee height in 6 months easily (Mine did anyway haha theyre big boys)

  • @Bigelowbrook says:

you might be able to pull out the posts using the 3-point hitch on your tractor.

  • @SouthpawDavey says:

It will make a good house. Dont cut it down too low. You might end up with a duck or Grouse situation.. More so if wearing a hat with a brim or peak.. I know my shed door is low I have banged my head loads of times but only when wearing a hat.. I would be tempted to have a chicken tractor and run it up and down before using the area as garden beds. I let mine on the beds in winter they ate what was left and the bugs an fertilized them. Might need a wide mesh bottom where you are.

  • @Gayle.M says:

My last flock got eaten by something that dug under the fence and into the coop.
My new coop is surrounded by any kind of wire barrier that I could find, laid on the ground, old wire shelves, broken dog kennels.
The grass will grow through them, I can weed whack over them, but nothing can dig through them.
