  • Charity White says:

Thank you for the idea! I think it is so cool you had the courage to try this.

  • Toon Vos says:

This is so neat and easier than the more complicated builds. I’m getting the items now to try it out!

    • Nina Marie says:

I hope it works out for you!! If you can get a 4ft tall stand instead of the 3ft tall Im using now, youll be in better shape. But so far so good on my end, doing round #2 and still just as successful as round #1.

  • Julie A says:

I have my hydroponic garden outside. I live in Arizona where the temperatures are getting to be in the 100 degree mark, it’s to hot for them!
I love the simplicity of this setup, thank you!!!

    • Nina Marie says:

Right!? As long as you have electricity, this can be done!

    • PoorGuy says:

@Nina Marie only electric needed would be to run the little pump, and just about any cheap solar panel can power one of those pumps ! ( with a battery backup for nighttime 🙂 )..
But that won’t help in an apartment.. HOWEVER. if you have a balcony in your apartment. you could surely set that all up outside on the balcony ! IMO..

  • Rob K says:

Bless your dad’s heart for coming through for you on the supplies.
I’m strictly an indoor-in-organic-soil guy and my father recoiled in horror when he saw what I have growing in my basement.
The price of veggies has my wife giving the nod to another grow light and a crack at hydroponics. Gonna grow something innocent for a change.

    • Nina Marie says:

Hydroponics are a great way to start for anyone beginning I think! We’ve taken to it very well here. Groceries are too expensive now. I hope it goes well for you guys, good luck.

    • Traveler Man says:

      And your father too lol.

  • Ezzy Does It says:

I’m 3 weeks into my grow now since i got inspired by your video. Love this setup and adding air pump now

  • Nancy L says:

Hi Nina, I finally have all the materials together that I need (took me long enough lol) and I was wondering how long do I need to keep the light on everyday. Thank you so much for this cool video I love it ❤

    • Nina Marie says:

Oh! I didn’t include getting a timer, look on Amazon for a simple outlet timer, that’s what you plug the lights into and set your 8 hours or so of when you want your lights on 🙂

  • Moto Nugget says:

This is awesome, I’d like to setup something like this!

  • Andrew says:

A VERY !!! good video. I liked that you learned from your mistakes, and you told the audience what you were going to fix, what to watch for, and other useful information. Thank you.

  • Devan Adrien says:

does the ph level mentioned need to be consistently checked? if so, what’s your schedule on that?
seems like the variety of plants you’re working with are doing great! is the ph kind of a universal good level? or do others require different?

    • Devan Adrien says:

do you cut down fertilizing before harvesting? i’ve head that some people had bitter greens if they were adding fert a week or so before eating

    • Nina Marie says:

I only checked it once, just in the beginning. I only fertilize when I start it, and then top up the water as I go, no extra fertilizing! In a month or so the lettuce gets all picked anyways and the process repeats!

Never use clear containers, you want as little light getting in as possible. Light is just gonna encourage growth of algie and bacteria and imped root growth (which looking @7:06 has gotten really bad) . If you’re gonna go with the DWC method, i would suggest black tough totes from home depot and spray paint the lids. Same if you’re using buckets with netcup lids, get the black 5gal buckets if you can otherwise you need to spray paint them. Also wouldn’t advice using rapid rooter, its not ph neutral and it will decompose throwing your system way off. Just use rock wool, for 1 to 2 inch net cup with hydroton (clay pebbles) you only need like a 12mm starter plug. You can cut like 12 of them out of a standard rockwool cube. Only other starter advice i could think to suggest would be pick your self up a digital pH meter (those strips are next to useless when balancing with adjusters) and TDS.

    • Nina Marie says:

Right I mention that I should have spray painted the containers black, but honestly I got such great growth that I’m starting to wonder if the algea benefitted in some way. Thanks for the suggestions!

    • X Moron says:

Does the plastic need to be food safe?

    • nikushim666 says:

@X Moron Depends on what you mean by food safe. Most totes and buckets are made from plastics considered “Food grade” such as polypropylene and PET. The only concern with plastics is BPA, which is more so just used in polycarb.

    • Traveler Man says:

@X Moron if you’re growing food in it, yes

    • Roobxcube says:

was thinking the same well said

  • lucifer says:

Not sure if it’s been said before but I’d recommend painting those totes with a coat or two of black then a coat or two of white paint. These transparent totes + nutrient rich water + light is a strong medium for algae growth and it can lead to all kinds of problems for the plant. Awesome setup though!

    • Nina Marie says:

Yes deff! I have to spray paint the outside container, although I wonder why the plants still thrived even with their roots covered in algea?

    • PoorGuy says:

@Nina Marie I can’t believe how many people said to paint the containers black?
seriously were we all watching the same video?? how did they all miss you saying you need to paint them black, due to algie etc.. ?? LOL …

  • Ria Gautam says:

Hi Nina! I loved how easy this video was to understand! I’m going to be trying this out for a school Science Fair soon and I was wondering if you had any tips?! Would I be able to do this with plants other than lettuce as well? Sunflowers for example? Also, were you able to eat the lettuce once it grew fully and how was the taste?! Thanks for making the video so clear to understand!

    • Nina Marie says:

Hey Ria! Hm I have not seen or tried sunflowers, I know people have success doing this method with strawberries and tomatoes. The lettuce tasted great, I got about a handful a day for salads and I even had to give some away because I had too much! It lasted longer in the fridge than store bought lettuce too!! Good luck I hope the science fair enjoys it :)))

  • Reuben Golamb says:

My wide and I watched this video a few times. It’s sooo simple and awesome. We just ordered all of the supplies. Thank you so much for making this and doing all of the hard work so we didn’t have to waste any money. If this works out, we will probably do a few of these

  • Jonatan Ryan says:

love it how you simplified hydroponics and made it work so well

  • Elizabeth Duncan says:

If you want more Lighting on your plants take your tin foil and place it where a lot of light is not shiny with a shiny part toward the light the light will bounce off of the tin foil giving it more lighting

  • Netti Gaming says:

Thank u for this. I’m so glad you also kept your mistakes in the vid. Helps the rest of us who want to try this. Thank you.

  • Tokyo est mon jardin says:

Minor tip: When making the holes for the netpots, just use your drill in reverse mode for a cleaner cut (start normal, when the teeth are in plastic shift to reverse).

  • I C says:

Thank you so very much for your video. My son has gotten into the hydroponic growing and even has a website. He is in a studio apartment now and needs something like the one you put together. I will be recommending you video to him.

  • Sharon Meints says:

This is so inspiring! Thank you!

  • iAm NaomiTamar says:

Thank you so much !!! So excited to start this ! Happy growing
